Show answer and step marks
- Gonadotropins (FSH and LH) from the anterior pituitary stimulate follicular development and secretion of estrogens by the growing ovarian follicles.+1
- A rapid surge of LH (LH surge) reaches its peak around the mid-cycle (14th day), inducing the rupture of the Graafian follicle and thereby causing ovulation.+1
- The remaining follicular tissues transform into the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone essential for the maintenance of the endometrium for implantation.+1
Answer: During the follicular phase, FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary rise gradually and stimulate follicle development and estrogen secretion. At mid-cycle (about day 14) LH and FSH peak; the LH surge causes the Graafian follicle to rupture and release the ovum (ovulation). The remaining follicle forms the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone to maintain the endometrium for implantation.
